The Advanced Composite program at Alabama Aviation College prepares students to work in aerospace, automotive, bridge building, marine, sporting goods, and parts assembly industries. This program introduces basic composite materials, techniques, and procedures and progresses through advanced composite skills. Students will demonstrate industry standards concerning safety, composite terminology, hand lay-ups, and composite inspection and repair. Our instructors are from the aerospace industry and have years of hands-on experience. This program will prepare students for entry-level employment as composite technicians.

What is Advanced Composites?
Composite parts provide superior strength and stiffness while being lightweight and can be formed into complex shapes. Composites products are widely used in many applications requiring high performance and excellent mechanical properties, such as aerospace, race cars, boating, sporting goods, and industrial applications. The wide range of advanced composite materials and resin system combinations makes it ideal for achieving specific performance requirements. As a result, composite materials are replacing metal and plastic in many industries and are the material of choice for many new applications.
WHAT TYPES OF JOBS CAN I GET?
Marine, aerospace, transportation, construction, energy, and sports equipment represent some of the industries where composites are used. The growing demand for stronger, lighter and more efficient building materials is driving the demand for skilled composite technicians who can work with these new materials and processes.
Successful graduates of this program may find employment opportunities in the following areas:
- Composite lab technicians
- Composite lab testing specialists
- Composite manufacturing technicians
- Automotive industry
- Aircraft manufacturing and repair
- Watercraft manufacturing and repair
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This curriculum provides training in various composite (reinforcing fiber in a polymer matrix) processing and testing methods. It will prepare individuals for employment by teaching them to utilize the latest composite processing and testing technologies.
Coursework in the composites program includes processing and designing composite structures and testing composite materials. Upon completion, students can fabricate, repair, and fasten composite structures to meet blueprint specifications and perform testing of the structures using specialized equipment. Composites are increasingly being used in aircraft, the automotive industry, watercraft, manufacturing, and other areas such as various sporting goods.
Students work toward taking American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) certification exams – the standard for composites credentialing.
