Advanced Composites

What is Advanced Composites, and what will I learn?

Advanced Composites refers to materials that combine two or more constituents to achieve superior properties. Composite parts provide superior strength and stiffness while being lightweight and can be formed into complex shapes. Composites products are widely used in many applications requiring high performance and excellent mechanical properties, such as aerospace, race cars, boating, sporting goods, and industrial applications. The wide range of advanced composite materials and resin system combinations makes it ideal for achieving specific performance requirements. As a result, composite materials are replacing metal and plastic in many industries and are the material of choice for many new applications.

The Advanced Composite program at Alabama Aviation College prepares students to work in aerospace, automotive, bridge building, marine, sporting goods, and parts assembly industries. This program introduces basic composite materials, techniques, and procedures and progresses through advanced composite skills. Students will demonstrate industry standards concerning safety, composite terminology, hand lay-ups, and composite inspection and repair. Our instructors are from the aerospace industry and have years of hands-on experience. This program will prepare students for entry-level employment as composite technicians.

Career Opportunities

After completing an associate degree or certificate program, graduates can pursue various job opportunities in Alabama, including:

  1. Composite Technician: Working in manufacturing environments to produce composite parts and products, ensuring quality and precision.
  2. Materials Engineer: Involved in research and development to improve composite materials for various applications.
  3. Aerospace Composite Specialist: Focusing on the use of composites in aircraft and spacecraft, which may involve positions with companies in the aerospace sector.
  4. Production Supervisor: Overseeing manufacturing processes in facilities that specialize in composite production.
  5. Quality Assurance Specialist: Ensuring that composite products meet industry standards and regulations through rigorous testing and evaluation.
