What is Practical Nursing, and what will I learn?

ESCC’s Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs not only help to meet the growing demand for well-trained nurses but also provide training to those who want to work in the medical field. With our Traditional and Bridge PN programs and our new ADN mobility program, you can receive high-quality training to serve your community as an LPN or an RN.

All Nursing Program Application Dates:

Summer Associate Degree Nursing Program: January 1 – March 15

Fall Associate Degree Nursing Program: March 1 – May 15

Practical Nursing Bridge Program: March 1 – May 15

Fall Practical Nursing Program: March 1 – May 15

Spring Practical Nursing Program: August 1 – October 15

Nursing is a vital healthcare profession focused on providing patient care, supporting recovery, and promoting overall health and wellness. Nurses play a critical role in various healthcare settings, working collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive comprehensive care.

Career Opportunities

After completing a nursing program, graduates can pursue various positions, including:

Registered Nurse (RN): Providing direct patient care in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings, often after passing the NCLEX-RN exam.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): Working under the supervision of RNs and physicians, providing basic nursing care and assisting with patient needs.
Nurse Manager: Overseeing nursing staff and coordinating patient care services in healthcare facilities.
Public Health Nurse: Working in community settings to promote health, prevent disease, and educate the public.

Practical Nursing - Traditional (Certificate)

Practical Nursing – Traditional programs prepare students to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). These programs focus on providing the foundational knowledge and clinical skills necessary to deliver basic patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or physicians.

Career Opportunities

After completing a traditional practical nursing program and passing the NCLEX-PN exam, graduates can pursue various positions, including:

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): Providing basic patient care in various settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient clinics.
Long-Term Care Nurse: Working in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, focusing on the care of elderly patients.
Home Health Nurse: Delivering nursing care to patients in their homes, often managing chronic conditions.
Rehabilitation Nurse: Assisting patients recovering from surgery or illness in rehabilitation centers.
Pediatric Nurse: Working in clinics or hospitals, providing care for children and adolescents.

Practical Nursing - Bridge (Certificate)

The Practical Nursing – Bridge program is designed for individuals who are already certified as Medical Assistants (CMA) or have prior healthcare experience and wish to advance their careers by becoming Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). This bridge program typically allows students to build on their existing knowledge and skills to prepare for the LPN licensure.

After completing a Practical Nursing Bridge program and passing the NCLEX-PN exam, graduates can pursue various positions, including:

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): Providing direct patient care in settings such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities.
Rehabilitation Nurse: Assisting patients recovering from surgeries or illnesses in rehabilitation centers.
Long-Term Care Nurse: Working in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, focusing on the elderly population’s care needs.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills
In a Practical Nurse job, you will need to have good communication skills. The job will require interacting with your patients and being able to communicate with them so that you can understand their needs.

In this career, your job is to work with sick and injured people. This may mean they move slowly and need your help with basic tasks. This may mean they have dementia and are unable to communicate meaningfully with you.
