This year, we are proud to announce Ms. Rosalyn Warren as recipient of the technical faculty award. Ms. Warren has been a faculty member for over 10 years. In addition to her full-time instructional duties, she has worked tirelessly to aid in the development of the 24-credit-hour short-term certificate titled “IT Professional” which serves as the core computer science curriculum for the IT Auditing & Assurance Associate Degree. She has added five industry recognized certifications to the offered short-term certificate. This not only a great opportunity for the traditional college students, but also is the focus of the Wiregrass IT Center of Excellence for dual enrollment high school students in the surrounding counties. Additionally, she was recently involved in the planning and implementation of the new App Development with Swift program and taught the ground-breaking course of the program this semester.

This year, we are proud to announce Ms. Linda Hodge as recipient of the Administration award. Ms. Hodge has been at the college for 29 years. She plays an integral role in the data collection and disbursement not just within the college but also state-wide. This person was a key leader in the only software conversion this college has ever experienced when ESCC went from a “home-grown” system to Alliant. She has worked with Information Services, Information Technology, and Institutional Effectiveness departments. She has helped with the alumni and foundation activities as well.

This year, we are proud to announce Mr. Jim Morrow as the recipient of the Academic Faculty Award. Mr. Morrow has been a faculty member for over 14 years. His educational background and intelligence are well respected by his peers. His humblelike able persona makes him a pleasure to work beside. Holding a master’s degree in Philosophy and Public Health and also certified to teach geography and economics, his willingness and ability to teach various disciplines has longed served as an asset to the college.  Mr. Morrow has a passion, dedication, and level of preparation that is evident in the classroom.

The President’s Cup is the most prestigious student award at Enterprise State Community College. The minimum qualifications are 36 or more semester hours completed with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, with full-time enrollment for at least one term during the current academic year. This year, 5 honor students were nominated by ESCC faculty and staff members to be candidates for this award. These nominees were evaluated based on their scholarship, their collegiate activities and their citizenship. Each one of these students have many accomplishments and are very deserving of this nomination for the President’s Cup.

The student chosen as this year’s President’s Cup winner is Magnola (Maggie) LeeAnn Johnson. Maggie is a sophomore from Elba, AL. She graduated from Elba High School in 2016 as the Valedictorian of her class and has maintained a 4.0 average throughout her tenure at ESCC. When Maggie became SGA President this academic year, she was immediately ready to get to work and encourage students to get involved with activities on campus.

Maggie truly encourages others with her positive attitude and her willingness to help rubs off on everyone that she encounters. Maggie not only excels through her active involvement at ESCC but, most importantly, she excels in the classroom. She is majoring in Accounting and will receive her Associates of Science with a concentration in Accounting this spring. She plans to continue her education and receive her bachelor’s in accounting after her tie at ESCC. She plans to eventually receive her master’s and become a Certified Public Accountant.

President Matt Rodgers, said, “Maggie embodies the qualities of ESCC that we wish to see in every student. Maggie has used her time at ESCC to not only better herself, but also better her school. She is a shining example of what the President’s Cup stands for at ESCC.”

Serving as President of Enterprise State Community College has been such a blessed opportunity that I truly appreciate. In just a short time, I have grown to admire the faculty and staff at ESCC/AAC and the opportunities provided by the College. Our instructors are second to none, and we have a loving staff dedicated to serving the needs of our students. As we continually work to uphold the standard of excellence in degree programs and course offerings, we want you to be a part of experiencing ESCC by enrolling in transferable general education courses or in technical courses this summer at ESCC.

Every profession that requires at least a four-year degree – from engineers, doctors, and lawyers to teachers, scientists, and journalists – will at some point require that students take college-level general education courses such as English, math, history, science, and art.

The benefit of taking general education courses at ESCC this summer is not only that the classes cost at least half of what students will pay for the same course on the four-year level, but that ESCC students have the opportunity to study with instructors with the same credentials as those on the four-year level in a much smaller, one-on-one environment that fosters student development and a village of support. It does not matter if the student is a high school senior who just graduated, a transient student who already attends another university, a current ESCC student, or a nontraditional student who just wants to pick up some courses to advance a career. ESCC has something for everyone.

Transfer students who start college this summer at ESCC and attend classes year-round could earn enough credits in four semesters to begin a third year at their selected transfer institution. One method that ESCC uses to provide a strong foundation for transfer students is by ensuring that the classes that they take at ESCC will actually transfer. ESCC can stand by this agreement when students follow the Alabama Articulation Program, which is also called STARS (Statewide Articulation Reporting System). STARS is designed to inform students about degree requirements and course equivalents from colleges from each state-funded four-year institution.

Another program through the Alabama Community College System called the “2 to 4 Transfer Program” creates a seamless transfer opportunity from ESCC to selected independent colleges in Alabama as well.

In addition to transfer opportunities at ESCC, students can obtain an Associate Degree in Arts, an Associate Degree in Science, or an Associate Degree in Applied Science after completing a set number of credit hours and courses.

ESCC also offers multiple certificate programs and AAS programs such as business administration, paralegal, computer science, and aviation that are all high wage and high-demand careers.  Many students who transfer obtain enough credits to graduate with an AA, AS or AAS before they transfer and can use their degree as leverage to potentially work in their field of study before obtaining their bachelor’s degree.

Since the 1960s, AAC has been located on U.S. Highway 231 in Ozark and has given students all the knowledge, skills and ability it takes to work in the aviation industry. As the only aviation maintenance program in the state of Alabama, AAC also offers Avionics Technology classes and an AAS degree. In just two years, six semesters, students are able to begin a career in aviation. The skill sets learned on campus can transition into other trades as well.

Not only are students able to study inside a classroom at ESCC. Online and hybrid courses, including a one-week speech class that counts as if the student attended the entire semester, are offered.

ENTERPRISE – Cheyanna Huston-McCrea and Haley Rose McInnis, two of Enterprise State Community College’s top academic students, have been nominated for the state of Alabama’s elite All-Alabama Academic Team.

Haley and Cheyanna were selected by ESCC faculty and staff to serve on the team. The criteria for selection across Alabama’s community colleges include students who “excel academically; demonstrate intellectual rigor in their course of study; show academic growth and potential; and use their two-year college education to better themselves, their college and their communities.”

All nominees are presented to the national Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for final selection. ESCC’s students joined other nominees for a special luncheon held in their honor on April 13, 2018 by the Alabama Community College System. As a result of their nomination, Cheyanna and Haley will each receive a $1,000 academic scholarship from the All-Alabama Academic Team Foundation.

Both Cheyanna and Haley were finalists in ESCC’s President’s Cup award, which is the highest honor the college awards to a current student. Cheyanna is an education major at ESCC with a 3.6 GPA. She was listed on the Dean’s List between Fall 2015 and Fall 2017. She was listed as Who’s Who of Two-Year College Students in the Spring of 2017. She has been consistently listed as a college honoree for a GPA of 3.5 and higher. In addition to her curricular activities, Cheyanna is president of Phi Theta Kappa, and has also served in other capacities for the honor society, including as Vice President of Fundraising, President of College Project, Alabama Regional President, and a Division II Candidate for International Officer. She is also a community volunteer. Cheyanna works as an ESCC Mathematics Work Study. She plans to attend The University of Alabama to earn a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Her goal is to teach Kindergarten or First grade.

Haley, an English Major at ESCC with a 3.919 GPA, is a past ESCC Academic Scholar, two-time President’s List and one-time Dean’s List student. In addition to her curricular activities, she is President of the Tau Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and of the Sigma Alpha Pi chapter of the National Society of Leadership & Success. She is also a member of the Alabama PTK region Outstanding Officer Team; a PTK Five Star Competitive Edge member, and recipient of the PTK Alabama region Hallmark award for Honors in Action Distinguished Theme. She is also a community volunteer. Haley works as an ESCC SSS tutor. Haley plans to attend Troy University and earn a bachelor’s degree in English. Her goal is to become a professional manuscript editor.

Summer is a great time to jump ahead and complete classes whether you’re an existing ESCC student, 4-Year University student home for the summer, or a new student.

Enterprise, AL – Five students nominated for top ESCC Student Honor ahead of Honor’s Day

A total of five students have qualified as nominees for Enterprise State Community College’s highest student honor, the President’s Cup. A finalist will be announced during the college’s Honor’s Day Ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, inside the ESCC Student Center.

The students who qualified for the nomination are Maggie Johnson, Haley Rose McInnis, Christie McLendon, Kayla Reese, and Cheyanna Husten-Mccrea. Their bios are included below.

A President’s Cup nominee is a private recommendation made by an ESCC faculty or staff member unknown to the potential candidates until Honor’s Day. Nominees must meet certain requirements, including 36 or more credit hours, a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and be enrolled as a full-time student at least one term during the current academic year. In addition, the student is not only required to be academically gifted, but also involved on the ESCC campus and in the local communities.

Other awards on Honor’s Day include the following: Excellence in Education Awards, All-Alabama Academic & Scholarships, National Society of Leadership and Success, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Awards, Scholars Bowl Team Awards, Alumnus of the Year, and ESCCEA Scholarship.

Information about the nominees for the President’s Cup include the following:

Maggie Johnson, Accounting major

GPA: 4.0

Maggie Johnson is currently an ESCC Presidential Scholar who has been on the President’s List – and taken a full load of courses – every semester at ESCC. Maggie has been accepted to both the University of Alabama and Troy University. She plans to continue her education after receiving her bachelor’s by completing her master’s and becoming a CPA. In addition to her curricular activities, Maggie is President of the Student Government Association and Vice President of the College Republicans at ESCC. She is also a member of ESCC’s Ambassadors and Diamond Dolls. She was also selected to attend the Student Leadership Institute the previous summer. The event is hosted by the Dean of Students Association. Maggie is also an active member of Elba First Assembly. She has participated in canned food drives, bake sales, and fundraisers for missionary trips. Maggie is an active volunteer with Speed the Light, as student-initiated volunteer program that helps missionaries across the world. Maggie has always been the first to volunteer to help with concessions when needed at campus activities and follows through with her commitments. She works at the Enterprise YMCA.

Haley Rose McInnis, English major

GPA: 3.919

Haley Rose McInnis is an All Alabama Academic Team member, past ESCC Academic Scholar, two-time President’s List and one-time Dean’s List student. In addition to her curricular activities, she is President of the Tau Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and of the Sigma Alpha Pi chapter of the National Society of Leadership & Success. She is also a member of the Alabama PTK region Outstanding Officer Team; a PTK Five Star Competitive Edge member, and recipient of the PTK Alabama region Hallmark award for Honors in Action Distinguished Theme. Haley is also President of the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Unit 73; president of the American Legion Auxiliary Junior Members-Enterprise Cook Clements Unit 73; publicity chairman of the American Legion family: Legion Auxiliary, Sons, Riders; regional Americanism chairman of the American Legion Auxiliary; member of the Flag education program for Girl Scouts; Relay for Life volunteer; American Legion Poker Run volunteer; Friends of the Enterprise Library; female Veteran Appreciation Luncheon guest speaker; and was a Memorial Day celebration guest speaker for American Legion at Meadowlawn Gardens. She has participated in the following through PTK: blood drives; Luke’s Legacy; Quilts of Comfort; Day of Change for the Ronald McDonald House; DHR book drive; Dancing with the Stars and Masquerade Ball for the ESCC Foundation; and Day of Service at ESCC. Haley works as an ESCC SSS tutor.

Christie McLendon, Health Information Technology major

GPA: 3.88

Christie McLendon has been listed on ESCC’s President’s List since the Fall of 2017 and was on the Dean’s List in 2016. Christie is also a Student Support Services Grant Scholarship Recipient. In addition to her curricular activities, Christie is a Student Support Services Student Advisory Board Member, Spirit Club Volunteer, Concessions Volunteer, and Study Group Leader in the HIT program. Christie was also selected as a LEAD Conference Student Supervisor and volunteer coordinator. Christie is also a Socks of Love volunteer for SSS; Children’s Ministry leader, fundraising coordinator for Hardships and Medical Needs, coordinator of Missions Fundraising, and Sunday school teacher at Mt. Olive Assembly of God. She is also a camp counselor for Camp Pentecost and Hospice Volunteer. Christie works as an ESCC Library and SAS Lab Work Study.

Cheyanna Huston-McCrea, Education major

GPA: 3.6

Cheyanna Huston-McCrea was listed on the Dean’s List between Fall 2015 and Fall 2017. She was listed as Who’s Who of Two-Year College Students in the Spring of 2017. She has been consistently listed as a college honoree for a GPA of 3.5 and higher. In addition to her curricular activities, Cheyanna is president of Phi Theta Kappa, and has also served in other capacities for the honor society, including as Vice President of Fundraising, President of College Project, Alabama Regional President, and a Division II Candidate for International Officer. She is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and was President of World Perspectives in 2016. She received the PTK Vicente Cortez Spirit of Phi Theta Kappa Award in 2018, the Distinguished Officer Award in 2017, and the Distinguished Officer Team Award in 2018. Cheyanna writes the monthly newsletter for the Early Childhood Education Center, volunteers at the New Brockton Elementary School and with New Brockton Pageants, and is a volunteer for the food and pet supply drive for the SOS Animal Shelter. She has also volunteered time making quilts and selling socks for the Quilts for Comfort Organization, has assisted with reading proficiency at the Early Childhood Education Center, and has volunteered time for the Trike-a-thon and Fall Festival at EEEC. Cheyanna works as an ESCC Mathematics Work Study.

Kayla Reese, Music major

GPA: 3.62

Kayla Reese is an ESCC Academic scholar and was listed on the President’s List in Fall 2017. In addition to her curricular activities, she is Vice President of Circle K and has served as treasurer of Phi Beta Lambda. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has served as Secretary and Treasurer of Circle K. Kayla also serves in dining halls and passes out food at Church of Jesus Christ on various Sundays for different events involving the community. She plays the piano on Friday night and Sunday morning services for the Church of Jesus Christ. Kayla works at the City of Enterprise Parks & Recreation Department.
